Philip grew up in Chicago and started his career as a drummer at age 16. He played on drums for Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and toured with him extensively, including performances at the prestigious Newport Jazz Festival and major North American venues. He has performed as a soloist, composer and arranger on over fifty albums. Keezer has also taught master classes at the Brubeck Institute, the Royal Academy of Music, the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz and The New School.

In the 1990s, he joined bassist Ray Brown’s trio and toured extensively in North America, Japan and Europe. Keezer’s recordings as a leader include Waiting in the Wings (SBE, 1989), a piano-jazz album; Via (Origin, 2011) with Joe Locke on vibes and Tim Garland on saxophone; Signing (Motema, 2012), a duo project with pianist Christian McBride; and his most recent release, Heart of the Piano (Motema, 2013).

Since 2010, he has been part of vocalist Denise Donatelli’s band, touring extensively, recording three CDs and receiving a Grammy nomination for the 2009 release Aurea. Keezer has also composed and recorded music influenced by Hawaiian, Okinawan and Afro-Peruvian folk traditions.

Aurea marks the second time that he has received a Grammy nod for his work. He also was nominated in the category of Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s) for Donatelli’s song, “Don’t Explain.” In addition to his busy performing schedule, Keezer is a prolific record producer. He has produced more than 40 albums, with credits on many of the industry’s top labels. He has collaborated with artists as diverse as Sting, Maria Schneider, Joshua Redman and Dizzy Gillespie.
